Blog by Lynne Lawrence MBE: Rethinking Learning for a Changing World

Executive Director of AMI and the Maria Montessori Institute Lynne Lawrence was awarded an MBE in the 2025 New Year Honours list. Speaking out in response to this extraordinary achievement, Lynne explains why the time is right for Montessori and it is needed more than ever before.

As we stand on the threshold of 2025, education faces unprecedented challenges. Rising levels of school refusal, poor attendance, and a mounting youth mental health crisis point to a fundamental misalignment between traditional educational approaches and the needs of today’s children. It is clear that there needs to be a radical shift in education – away from the age-old approach of teaching to the test, to an approach that nurtures the capacities of each child, helping them to become resilient, independent thinkers who can collaborate and come up with creative solutions to the challenges facing them in their rapidly evolving future.

2025 must be the year we rethink education. We desperately need innovative, child-centred approaches like Montessori to meet these pressing challenges.

Preparing for a Future We Cannot Predict
In an era where 65% of children entering primary school today will work in jobs that don’t yet exist, education must move beyond rote learning and fixed curricula. Former U.S. Secretary of Education Richard Riley aptly noted, “We are currently preparing students for jobs that don’t yet exist, using technologies that haven’t been invented in order to solve problems we don’t even know are problems yet.”

To thrive in such an uncertain future, children need to develop skills like critical thinking, collaboration, creativity, and emotional intelligence. Yet, traditional systems often prioritize test scores over the cultivation of these vital capacities. This gap leaves students ill-equipped to navigate the complexities of modern life and work.

Why Montessori Matters Now More Than Ever
Maria Montessori anticipated this need over a century ago. She argued that education should “release human potentialities” rather than merely impart knowledge. Today, Montessori’s principles resonate more strongly than ever, offering a model that balances academic learning with the development of essential life skills.

Key elements of the Montessori approach that can help us address the challenges we face include:

• Hands-On Learning: Montessori emphasizes tactile, practical activities that engage children in problem-solving and exploration. These activities build motor skills, concentration, and creativity, laying the foundation for lifelong learning.

• Individualized Pace: Unlike traditional classrooms, Montessori allows children to progress at their own speed. This personalized approach fosters confidence, independence, and a love of learning.

• Mixed-Age Classrooms: By integrating children of different ages, Montessori creates a collaborative mini-community where younger children learn from older peers, and older children develop leadership and empathy.

• Mistakes as Learning Opportunities: In Montessori, errors are celebrated as a natural part of the learning process. This mindset encourages resilience and innovation, qualities essential for future problem-solving.

• Prioritising social and emotional development: Through activities that promote cooperation and responsibility, children cultivate emotional intelligence, empathy, and the ability to work harmoniously with others. These “soft skills” are increasingly recognized as critical to personal and professional success.

Research supports Montessori’s effectiveness in fostering well-being. A 2022 University of Virginia study found that adults who had attended Montessori schools reported significantly higher levels of well-being than their peers. Similarly, neuroscientific studies highlight the alignment between Montessori methods and the natural processes of brain development, particularly during early childhood and adolescence.

Reimagining Education for the 21st Century
As we navigate the challenges of 2025 and beyond, the Montessori approach offers a compelling alternative to conventional education. By focusing on the whole child—intellectually, emotionally, and socially—it prepares young people to meet the demands of an unpredictable future with confidence and creativity.

Montessori reminds us that education should be about optimizing human potential, not merely filling minds with facts. It’s time to embrace this timeless approach to equip children not only for the modern workplace but for life itself.
