The Hampstead (upstairs) Children’s House recently held a pop-up session on early language and preparation for writing. Parents of a few children of similar age and working with the same material were invited to come in during school time for a taster of what those materials and activities are about.
Over a period of half an hour, parents saw how ‘metal insets’ are presented to children in preparation of the hand for writing. Other children who were interested came to listen, add to the presentation, and even brought over examples of their work to show and illustrate the theory. They enjoyed the feeling of knowing more about the material than the parents and were inspired to do more for themselves.
While the parents have seen the results of this work brought home, they have never seen how interesting and challenging it is to produce!
Watch this space for more pop-ups in other classes and sites.
