Around the age of six years, the children transition into the Elementary Programme. The mixed-age classes provide a dynamic and collaborative environment where children learn through debate, discussion, exploration, and investigative research across all subject areas: Language, Maths, Science, History, Geography, Art, Music, Drama and Life Skills.
Children will have developed independence of thought and action, confidence, intellectual curiosity, concentration, self-discipline and enthusiasm for learning in the Children's House which is strengthened and built upon during their time in the Elementary.
The curriculum is interdisciplinary and academically robust. It covers the full range of subjects required by the National Curriculum whilst maintaining essential Montessori principles. Many new materials are introduced as they develop their imagination to embrace concepts beyond their immediate environment and develop their moral compass as they grapple with important questions about the ways of the world in which they live.
Children work individually and in groups on projects and themes that spark their interest. The teacher’s role is to guide the child’s development as they take full advantage of the Montessori materials, the prepared environment, and child-led school outings.

Biology

Biology, the story of the plants and animals, forms an already existing part of the children’s environment; the children are surrounded by the beauty and diversity of life. Our aim in the Elementary is to support the child’s ability to make connections and to deepen their understanding of the relationships that exist by studying, analysing, and making comparisons about plant and animal life. Their needs, the function of each part, their relationship with the environment and the scientific classification of plants and animals collectively unlock a vast amount of knowledge for the children to explore and consolidate information.

General Science and Geography

By way of stories, impressionistic charts, and experiments, the children are introduced to geography and science through the study of the Universe. We begin with a vision of the whole and then delve into detailed investigations of the relationship between the Sun and the Earth, the Nature of the Elements and States of Matter, the Work of Air, and the Work of Water. The children explore how all these phenomena are linked together, and then they continue on to study the role of human beings and our interdependencies amongst each other through production, consumption, imports, and exports.

Mathematics

Harnessing the Mathematical Mind, the Elementary children are introduced to complex mathematical concepts using concrete materials. The children manipulate the materials, working at their own pace and in a manner that not only suits the child but leads them to the discovery of mathematical rules, equations, and laws. The robust Montessori maths curriculum spans the four operations, fractions and decimal fractions, divisibility, squaring and cubing, signed numbers, algebra, powers of numbers, ratio and proportion, and a comprehensive study of geometry.

History

The story of human beings, and their contributions and cooperation over time is woven throughout the entirety of the Elementary curriculum. The children, through their research, learn about how different people and cultures have satisfied their physical and spiritual needs across the world and throughout the span of time. The children hear stories about how human beings worked collaboratively towards an improved life, including the struggles and hardships they encountered, and the inventions and discoveries that emerged. Their studies lead not only to a developing sense of reverence for how society has evolved and a sense of gratitude for all who came before them, but as well, a desire to one day contribute to the greater good of the world and humanity.

Language

Throughout the Elementary programme, the child comes to understand that language is a human creation used to transmit culture and satisfy our needs for communication, connection, and self-expression. The children are introduced to the history of spoken and written language and then engage in a deep exploration of the key components of language, spoken language and expression, written composition, grammar and syntax, style, and literature. They learn how to appreciate different styles of language and how to identify what they find appealing, and ultimately, develop awareness around the use of language for the betterment of society.

Visual and Performing Arts

Music, Art, and Drama offer the children important tools to express ideas, emotions, and experiences through the use of different mediums. Artistic exploration offers the children a powerful means of self-expression and is a vehicle to inspiring interest in other areas of study. Visual arts, music, and performance art are an integrated part of the Montessori environment, as the children enjoy lessons related to art history, the principles and elements of art, techniques using a variety of different medium, drama, rhythm, and music theory and composition with the Montessori material, the tone bars.

Physical Education (PE)

Physical Education is an integrated part of the Elementary programme, taking place every Friday afternoon. The children join a team of coaches at the park or in the Sports Hall (depending on the time of year) and participate in various games and skill building activities. The physical education programme includes activities such as football, floor hockey, basketball, track and field, and swimming.

Spanish Language Programme

The Spanish Language Programme is led by trained AMI Montessori Teachers and is implemented with a Montessori approach, offering children the chance to engage in a second language through movement, games, music, drama, and practical life activities, such as cooking and outings, as well as numeracy, writing, and grammar. The Spanish lessons and activities are presented during the school day and in a way that naturally flows within the daily work cycle. Our Montessori Spanish teachers provide exposure, exploration, and sensitization to a second language at a key stage in language development, gradually building confidence and an appreciation for learning additional languages.

Upper Elementary Overnight Excursions

The Upper Elementary children (9 to 12 years) are offered the opportunity to participate in a variety of unique overnight outings over the course of the three-year Upper Elementary cycle. Some of the experiences offered have included the Bushcraft Company, Montessori Model United Nations, and PGL. These excursions provide the children with the chance to bond as a community in a different setting, to share wonderful memories with their peers and teachers, and to prepare for the extended trips that take place at the Adolescent (12 to 16 years) level.
