Personalised

Children are carefully observed on a regular basis, both individually and in a group to assist in their personal development. All children have regular 1:1 time with teachers.

Hands-on

Children learn through real life experiences and through specially designed Montessori materials which are hands-on, tactile and visual and help make abstract concepts concrete.

Self Paced

Freedom for children to work at their own pace, without interruption, choosing from a range of activities that are developmentally challenging and appropriate.

Mixed-Age

Mixed-age classrooms not only offer a wide range of activities to spark children’s interests but also enable them to learn from others and learn by helping others. A mixed-age environment also naturally removes competition and encourages collaboration, as each child is on their own individual learning journey and reaches milestones in their own time, rather than feeling dictated by age pressures.

Joyful

Children in Montessori follow their interests, wherever that passion leads, giving them a lifelong love of learning. They develop a natural appreciation for every subject because they come to it in their own time, driven by inner urges and interests, rather than feeling that the subjects are forced upon them.

Confident

Mistakes are viewed as part of the learning experience in Montessori and never discouraged. Instead, children self-correct as they learn, which frees them from fear, anxiety and judgement of themselves or others, and naturally leads to confidence in their own abilities and capacities.

Highly qualified teachers

We are proud to have a highly qualified, experienced and very knowledgeable school team. All our teachers have many years of teaching and childcare experience and over 90% of them hold at least 1 AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) Diploma or Certificate. Many of our teachers have additional teaching as well as non-teaching degrees; whether from previous careers or personal interests.
The Maria Montessori School is accredited by Montessori Education (UK), the national standards body for Montessori education in Britain.

The Children's House (Early Years)

The Montessori Children’s House is a mixed-age environment for children between the ages of 2½ to 6 years. At the Children’s House each child develops at his or her own pace, in the prepared Montessori environment with the specially designed Montessori materials. There will be an atmosphere of calm as children concentrate on what they are doing for surprisingly long periods of time.

Our Children's House Programme is at:

Elementary (Primary)

At around the age of six years, the children transition into the Elementary Programme. Children will have developed independence of thought and action, confidence, intellectual curiosity, concentration, self-discipline and enthusiasm for learning in the Children's House which is strengthened and built upon during their time in the Elementary.

Our Elementary Programme is at:

Adolescent (Secondary)

At the age of 12, children join our newly established Montessori Adolescent programme – a “Place of Study and Work” that fosters the developing sense of self in students 12 to 16 years through real and meaningful work. The coursework is designed to give students a sense of purpose and belonging as they explore the philosophical questions: Who am I in relation to society? What is my role? What will be my future?

Our Adolescent Programme is at:

“The way in which staff develop pupils’ independence, resilience and personal and social development is a strength. Pupils are confident, motivated and eager to learn. Pupils of all ages demonstrate an impressive awareness of themselves and others. They are kind and considerate and always try their best.”
