We are the Maria Montessori Institute. We work for a world where Montessori education is empowering the next generation to be happier, more fulfilled, and better able to make a positive difference to their family, their community, and the planet.

The UK's Only AMI Training Centre

We provide world-recognised AMI (Association Montessori Internationale) teacher training and AMI Orientation certificates as well as professional development and short courses for parents, carers and anyone interested in the Montessori approach. Our courses are delivered by highly qualified trainers who all have AMI qualifications and substantial experience of Montessori environments. Our Course Directors have undertaken the rigorous AMI Training of Trainers programme.

We Run An Exemplar London Montessori School

We run an exemplar school offering the highest-quality AMI Montessori education for 2½ to 16 year olds on four sites across North and West London. All our teachers are AMI trained and receive on-going professional development and mentorship which ensures they are actively engaged in reflective practice to maintain the utmost standards of Montessori education.

We Champion the Montessori Approach and Run Outreach Programmes in the UK & Abroad

We champion the power of the Montessori approach at every stage of life and run targeted Montessori initiatives in the UK and abroad supporting parents, carers and communities in challenging circumstances.

Authentic Montessori environments encompass the following principles:

What is Montessori?

A prepared environment

A Montessori environment is meticulously prepared with all the materials that children need to learn, according to their age and stage of development. Children learn in a calm, peaceful and caring setting which they take responsibility for. This enables them to develop a community mindset and a strong sense of responsibility. The beautiful wooden materials that you will see in Montessori schools are precise and scientifically designed. Each material has a particular purpose and enables the child to develop a particular skill.

Mixed age groups

Classes of children with a broader range of ages provides not only a wider range of activities to spark children’s interest, but also enables children to learn from others and learn by helping others.

Freedom for children to work at their own pace

Children are free to work at their own pace, without interruption, choosing from a range of activities that are developmentally challenging and appropriate.

Freedom to explore

Exploration is encouraged so that children find things out for themselves, make mistakes and correct them independently.

Respect for each child

Every child is respected as an individual personality with unique talents.

Respect for others

The Montessori community focuses on respect for others, the community and the environment.

A specially trained adult

An AMI Montessori teacher has a deep understanding of child development and has been thoroughly trained to guide children towards productive and challenging experiences, both individually and collectively, that will provide a firm foundation for their future.
“Education should no longer be the imparting of knowledge, but must take a new path, seeking the release of human potentialities.”
