Overview

All learning starts with a stimulus to the senses which sets in motion the pathway that enables the brain to form, store and retrieve memories. Drawing on the neuroscientific principles that underpin learning, this four session online professional development seminar will revisit the many ways in which we give sensorial experience in the Children’s House.

“Psycho-sensorial education is the basis for educating the intelligence – not only, because it gives material to the intellect, but also because it establishes order in the construction of the intellect”. Maria Montessori – 1913 Rome Lectures

What Students Say

“The content was rich and well-researched, and I truly appreciate how it was thoughtfully shared with us. The combination of theory and practice was particularly effective.”

“I loved how relevant it was to our current work with children. Louise was superb she has a gift in making the complicated uncomplicated and relevant to Montessori.”

“The ‘brain’ theory was really interesting and very accessible.”

“I enjoyed learning about developmental neuropsychology. In particular, the different aspects of the brain such as how memory functions and relating this knowledge to Montessori practice.”

What Will I Learn About?

The course will:

• Give an overview of how the brain learns
• Highlight the role of sensorial experience in learning
• Explore the link between motor skills and sensorial experience
• Emphasise the aspects of the children’s activity, which neuroscientific knowledge tells us are key to learning
• Cover both theoretical and practical aspects of the sensorial area

The course will be run across a 4-week period. To ensure active engagement in the learning from the course, participants will be given some ideas for observing the children’s motor and sensory activity in the Children’s House through the lens of the neuroscientific basis for learning – and these will be discussed at subsequent sessions.
