Learning about Weights and Measures

The Hampstead Upper Elementary children had an interesting session on weights and measures with Professor Justin Benesch from the Department of Chemistry at the University of Oxford.

The children learnt about how and why the ‘kilo’ came to be a unit of measurement, the master kilogram, weighing things with gravity and how something might have a different weight in a different country.

They also conducted some experiments on weighing different objects. They found it interesting that certain objects appeared a lot lighter or heavier than they imagined.
