“Practical Life – the Montessori Approach to the Education of Movement” – Online this November
Join us for our annual AMI Annual Refresher Course, a professional development course for those with a Montessori diploma qualification. Our 2020 course will run online over four sessions on Thursdays in November 2020. This year’s course will focus on Practical Life and the Montessori approach to developing fine and gross motor skills.
“The education of the mind of the child is thus tied up to his movements and to the education of these movements.”
More About the 2020 Course
In this AMI Refresher, our Director of Training Louise Livingston will help participants revisit the principles of Practical Life and look at ways to hone their own skills in putting this foundational part of the Montessori approach into practice.
The course will draw on Louise’s post-graduate studies on translating understanding from educational neuroscience into classroom practice. Over the last five years she has investigated the development of children’s ability to pay attention and self-regulate, which science suggests is rooted in the control of movement. Louise says:
“I have always known that Maria Montessori was way ahead of her time in her thinking on child development, but I have been astounded by how she seems to have intuitively understood how children’s brains and behaviours develop and incorporated this into her approach. My aim in this AMI Refresher is to translate my scientific knowledge into something teachers can understand and implement through Practical Life to support the development of motor and attention skills.”
The course will focus on:
• How to observe and understand children’s motor skills in order to respond to their unique needs
• How to prepare the Practical Life area of your environment in a way that prompts children to engage in refinement of motor skills
• Techniques for engaging all children to practice and develop complex motor skills
As this annual professional development opportunity is available online for the first time this year we hope more people will be able to attend from around the world.
